Setting up Netscape to use a proxy server

You must first contact the library (Angela Ledger, x5-5460) to have a proxy server account created before following these steps.

  1. Pull down the EDIT menu and choose PREFERENCES
  2. On the left side of the PREFERENCES dialog box, the last option is ADVANCED. Double-click ADVANCED to show its sub-menu items.
  3. Single-click PROXIES. The right side of the PREFERENCES dialog box will change to reflect proxy options.
  4. Select MANUAL PROXY CONFIGURATION. For HTTP proxy, enter the address ftp.library.lsuhsc.edu and the port number 3128.
  5. Click OK on the dialog box to complete the process.
The first web page your browser visits whenever it is started will now prompt you for a userID and password. Use the values assigned to you by the library for userID and password.

Note that sometimes, you will get a spurious "page not found" message on the first page you load after turning on the proxy server--this problem should disappear when you hit your browser's REFRESH button.

The proxy server does tend to slow down network access, so you will probably want to turn it on only when you need to access IP-validated resources. You can toggle the proxy server on and off by simply selecting MANUAL PROXY CONFIGURATION or DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET under Edit-->Preferences-->Proxies.

The address and port number are "sticky" and should not have to be reentered.
