Setting up Internet explorer to use a proxy server over a dialup connection
You must first contact the library (Angela Ledger, x5-5460) to have a proxy server account created before following these steps.
- Pull down the TOOLS menu and choose INTERNET OPTIONS
- Click the CONNECTIONS tab
- About halfway down the dialog box is a button for SETTINGS (not the button towards the bottom for LAN SETTINGS). Click it.
- You should get another dialog box, titled "proxy server" which has a checkbox for "use a proxy server." Check that box, then click the ADVANCED button. For HTTP:, enter the address ftp.library.lsuhsc.edu and port number 3128.
- Click OK on all dialog boxes to complete the process.
The first web page your browser visits whenever it is started will now prompt you for a userID and password. Use the values the assigned to you by the library for userID and password.
Note that sometimes, you will get a spurious "page not found" message on the first page you load after turning on the proxy server--this problem should disappear when you hit your browser's REFRESH button.
The proxy server does tend to slow down network access, so you will probably want to turn it on only when you need to access IP-validated resources. You can toggle the proxy server on and off by simply checking or unchecking the "use proxy server" box under tools-->Internet Options-->Connections-->Settings (the SETTINGS section in the middle part of the dialog box, not the LAN SETTINGS button at the bottom, which is used only for broadband-type connections such as cable modems & DSL.)
The address and port number are "sticky" and should not have to be reentered.
