Setting up Internet explorer to use a proxy server over a broadband connection

You must first contact the library (Angela Ledger, x5-5460) to have a proxy server account created before following these steps.

  1. Pull down the TOOLS menu and choose INTERNET OPTIONS
  2. Click the CONNECTIONS tab
  3. Click LAN SETTINGS; check the USE PROXY SERVER box
  4. Depending on the version of IE you are running, you may have to click the ADVANCED box in order to enter the address of the proxy server and the port number. The proxy server address is ftp.library.lsuhsc.edu and the port number is 3128.
  5. Click OK on all dialog boxes to complete the process.
The first web page your browser visits whenever it is started will now prompt you for a userID and password. Use the values assigned to you by the library userID and password.

Note that sometimes, you will get a spurious "page not found" message on the first page you load after turning on the proxy server--this problem should disappear when you hit your browser's REFRESH button.

The proxy server does tend to slow down network access, so you will probably want to turn it on only when you need to access IP-validated resources. You can toggle the proxy server on and off by simply checking or unchecking the "use proxy server" box under tools-->Internet Options-->Connections-->LAN settings.

The address and port number are "sticky" and should not have to be reentered.
