Library Bids Farewell to Reference Librarian

Alexandria (“Lexi”) Brackett, Reference Librarian, is leaving LSU Health Shreveport in May for a position as Clinical Librarian at Yale University’s Cushing/Whitney Medical Library.  Ms. Brackett joined our staff in August 2015 from the library at University of Oklahoma-Tulsa.  In addition to her reference duties, she has taught classes and served as one of the Writing Consultants.  She served as librarian liaison to the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Physical Therapy.  She has also been responsible for our social media presence on Twitter and Facebook.  We appreciate her service to the Library and LSU Health, and we wish her all the best in the future!

“Six-word Story Contest” Winner

In celebration of National Poetry Month and the end of the academic year, the Health Sciences Library sponsored a special contest.  Students, faculty, and staff were challenged to submit a six-word description of their academic year, and the entries were judged by local author Phil Estes.  Congratulations to Dr. Oluwayemisi Ojemakinde, House Officer 4 in the Department of Radiology, who received a $10 Starbucks gift card for her winning entry. “My Academic Year” by Dr. Ojemakinde is currently on display in the Library.

Departmental Copying & Printing with PaperCut

The Library’s new PaperCut system allows you to pay for copying and printing with your ID badge. It is also possible for departments to set up accounts to cover copying and printing costs for their faculty and staff.  If you are authorized by your department, then you will be able to use your own ID to pay from your department’s account, with no need to keep up with a departmental card or remember the department’s code. We are working with departmental business managers to implement this feature.  Contact your business manager or the Library staff for more information.

Award-Winning Library Staff

Congratulations to LaDestinae (Destiny) McKay, Library student worker, who was recently awarded the School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP) Alumni Scholarship. Ms. McKay is currently a senior in Clinical Laboratory Science.  Allied Health students are nominated for the scholarship by their respective program directors, and the recipient is selected by the Alumni Affairs Committee.  The award is funded by SAHP alumni events held throughout the year.

New PreTest Books Now Available

The PreTest Self-Assessment and Review books published by McGraw-Hill are an excellent resource for preparing for the USMLE Step exams.  In response to student requests, we have updated the PreTest books on Reserve and added two additional titles:  Emergency Medicine PreTest Self-Assessment and Review and Family Medicine PreTest Self-Assessment and Review.  Funding for the purchase of these books was provided by the Marianne and Stafford Comegys Library Enhancement Fund, an endowment established to provide financial support for library needs.

Congratulations to Our Artists!

On Thursday, April 6, the faculty, staff, and students participating in the Art from the Heart 2017 Show were honored at a reception in the Health Sciences Library. Everyone from campus affiliates to the general public was invited to vote for his or her favorite artwork among the 40+ pieces created by these talented artists from both LSU Health and University Health. Over 100 votes were cast, and the winning artists were presented with awards at the reception. The show will only be on display until June 2, so hurry to the Library to see the artistic talents of your coworkers, professors, students, and friends.

Do You Use the Writing Consultant Service? We Want to Hear from You!

The Library’s Writing Consultants edit and proofread writing projects for faculty, staff, and students.  We are currently conducting a survey to determine if we are fulfilling our goals.  If you received the survey via email, please take a couple of minutes to complete it, and return it to us by April 21.  If we have edited a document for you within the past year but you did not receive the survey, please email us at so that we can send it to you.  Thanks in advance for helping us discover how we can better assist you with your writing projects!

Remembering Billy Triplett

Billy Triplett began working at the Library of the LSU Health Sciences Center - Shreveport in September 1975 and eventually became the Library’s Assistant Director of Operations.  He retired from LSU on January 31, 2007, with 31 years of service. When he passed away on November 1, 2016, his family generously requested that memorial donations be made to the LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport Library. These funds have been used to purchase a beautiful bench for the Library. After the purchase of the bench, the Library was able to acquire electronic access to Orthopaedic knowledge update: sports medicine 5 with the remaining funds.  These items will serve as lasting tributes to our beloved colleague.
