Librarians Participate in International Meeting

The Medical Library Association, the Canadian Health Libraries Association/Association des bibliothèques de la santé du Canada, and the International Clinical Librarians Conference recently held a joint meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  Several LSU Health Shreveport librarians presented their work at the conference:

Julia M. Esparza, Head of User Education and Outreach Services and David C. Duggar, Head of the Library Liaison Program, presented the contributed paper ““Morning Report Mosaic: Information Resources Used to Answer Clinical Questions from Morning Report.”  The paper was co-written with Internal Medicine House Officers Deepthi Gangireddy, MD, and  Megan Hughes, MD; Gunjan Kahlon, MD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine; and Taylor Gatson, Research Apprentice, Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program, Department of Multicultural Affairs.

Dixie Jones and Barbara Reilly presented a poster on “The Shifting Kaleidoscopic View Resulting from a Mandated Change in Hospital Affiliations.”

Montie’ Dobbins and David Duggar presented a poster on “Creating the Region 7 Mosaic: Three Conversations for a Better Community.” Co-presenter of the poster was Paula Craig, librarian at Northwestern State University College of Nursing.

Will Olmstadt and Deidra Woodson presented a poster on “Health Literacy with Comics: Using a Comic Book Format to Help Families Prevent Childhood Obesity.” Co-creators of the poster included former staff members Talicia Tarver and Charlie Tudor, along with John Vanchiere, MD, Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, and graphic artist Nick Fechter.


Library Building Access May 26-30

Due to a BRI roofing project, the roadway between the C Lot (BRI Parking) and D Lot parking entrances will be blocked off from May 26 until May 30. This area includes the BRI curb. Pedestrian traffic will be closed to the BRI Atrium and the Library Building east entrance doors. Pedestrians may use the alleyway between the Administration Building and the BRI to use the Medical School northeast entrance. Pedestrians may also walk around the Library Building to use the Medical School west entrance. The shuttle bus stop along the BRI curb will be temporarily moved east of C Lot along Dowdell Street.


Memorial Day

The Library will be closed Monday, May 30, for the Memorial Day holiday. Normal hours will resume at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday!


Who Let the Dogs Out… Again?!

Therapy dogs will be back in the Library on Thursday, May 19, at 2:00 p.m. Employees and students are welcome to visit with them for stress relief or just for the love of dogs.


Student Wins Exclusive Study Room for Finals Week

Congratulations to Lauren Lange, first year medical student, who is this semester’s “Win An Exclusive Study Room For Finals Week” contest winner! Take a Break with BB-8!

Wednesday, May 4, is “May the Fourth be with You” Day. Take a break with BB-8, the newest ‘droid’ from Star Wars from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Library. Remote control trucks will also be available for employees and students to take a break with.


Win An Exclusive Study Room For Finals Week!

LSU Health Shreveport Health Sciences Library is giving away one private, VIP study room to one lucky student to study for end of semester, year, module or rotation examination.

To enter this VIP contest: you can like, share or join the official Facebook event OR retweet us on Twitter on Tuesday, May 2nd at 9:00 a.m. until Thursday, May 5th at midnight. You can even enter the contest all three ways (Like, Share, Join) to increase your chances.

We will randomly select one winner from all entries on 9:00 a.m. May 6th using randomization software. The winner will be contacted via Louisiana State University Health Science Center email on the morning of Friday, May 6th and must respond by 5:00 p.m. that day. If they do not respond, they lose the prize and a new winner will be selected.

After notification, the winner will get to choose the exclusive study room to use during week of their choosing (Monday through Friday). The key for the selected study room will be held for the student’s exclusive use at the Circulation desk during the week.


Library and Pediatrics Faculty Cooperate for Shreveport Medical Society Alliance Grant

The Shreveport Medical Society Alliance recently awarded John Vanchiere, MD PhD, Professor and Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and Will Olmstadt, Library Associate Director, a $1,565 Health Project Grant. The funds will be used to purchase audiovisual equipment and patient-friendly DVDs for use in the Viral Disease Clinic on St. Vincent Avenue and the Children’s Clinical Research Center on the LSU Health Shreveport campus.
