Librarians and Captain Fit Combat Childhood Obesity

Congratulations to Deidra Woodson, Metadata & Digitization Librarian, and Will Olmstadt, Library Associate Director, whose article “A Novel Tool for Health Literacy: Using Comic Books to Combat Childhood Obesity” appears in the current issue of Journal of Hospital Librarianship.  They co-authored the article with Dr. John Vanchiere from the Department of Pediatrics, former Library faculty members Talicia Tarver and Charlie Tudor, and graphic artist Nick Fechter. The article describes their creation of The Amazing Captain Fit Comic Book .  Funded through a Health Information Literacy Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, the comic follows the adventures of a young boy who aspires to be just like his favorite superhero, Captain Fit. However, the boy must first complete a series of tasks to make sure he is himself healthy and ready to help Captain Fit fight childhood obesity.
